Schultzy's Steech is a steelhead fly that was designed by guide and shop owner Mike Schultz. This fly has proven itself throughout the Great Lakes region and is a simple, yet must have fly for these migratory monsters.
Many years ago, when Mike was guiding a ton for Steelhead on Michigan's Pere Marquette River, he found that he (read clients) were losing a ton of flies. This tends to happen with steelhead and especially on the PM. He set out do design a fly that was simple and quick to tie, yet as effective as some of the more complicated flies. He did it!
The Steech has a bit of everything you'd want going on. A bit streamer, a bit soft hackle, a bit attractor, a bit egg-sucking leech. A wing of Finn Raccoon, some ice dub, some soft hackle and a bright spot ice dub head. Fish it as a nymph, fish it as a streamer, swing it, swim it, drift it......just make sure to fish it! It's actually a nice little attractor streamer for trout. Stocked rainbows love it!!!!
Schultzy's Steech fly is tied on a Daiichi 1530 hook in a size 8 and available here in black. This fly measures approximately 2" long.
