The Mulberry fly to have here! This is the one that is featured in the Carpin' DVD with our very own Brian Flechsig and Dave Whitlock. This is also the fly that was the focus of the Walker's Cay Chronicles with Flip Pallot and Brian (see our YouTube Channel to watch the episode).
This fly was shown to Brian many years ago by an old timer here in Ohio. It is basically a sucker spawn fly tied with Black or Purple Chenille.
As anybody who fishes the mulberry knows though, they must have the right "plop" as they enter the water. Otherwise, the fish may not pay attention. After trying a variety of ways to weight this fly, Brian finally settled on a thin thread of Zap-a-Gap on the underside of the hook shank. Gives this fly just the right "plop"!
Carp Mulberry Fly sold here in Purple and tied on a #10 Daiichi 1530 hook. The purple seems to work best early on in the "hatch" but a good idea to have both black and purple on hand just in case.
