Temple Fork Outfitters – BC Big Fly Rod

Earlier this year, Temple Fork Outfitters released the highly anticipated “BC Big Fly” designed specifically toward throwing big flies at big fish. The rod was designed by Blane Chocklett and replaces the ever popular Esox series.

Given the popularity of the Esox, the BC Big Fly builds upon many of the great concepts from its predecessor but utilizes the latest and greatest technology from TFO.

This rod is built with the highest modulus materials and Temple Fork’s legendary Axiom technology. This allows the rod to load easily and recover very quickly, doing so with virtually no wobble or unwanted shock, something you normally fight with when throwing big flies and aggressive lines. In short, you can cast big flies repeatedly for hours with minimal fatigue.

Each model comes with super durable RECOIL stripping guides and superlight single foot snake guides, which stand up to the hard life and abuse of a predatory rod. Dual uplocking reel seats and hook keeper round out the stout hardware on these rods.

One of the rods most functional features is the grip and fighting butt. TFO and designer/advisor Blane Chocklett decided the rod needed a composite cork handle and fighting butt. This material is very comfortable and functional. The most noticeable benefits of using composite cork are one, the bond to the blank itself is much stronger and far less likely to come unglued. A problem regularly encountered with rods using natural cork handles. The second is it also seems to be more sensitive. This is helpful when detecting those deep eats from musky that sometimes feel like a slight resistance change in your retrieve. The fighting butt makes casting bigger flies a lot less stressful on your wrist and arm. It is also extremely helpful when executing those critical boatside maneuvers and figure 8’s.
Unlike its predecessor, this rod is offered in three sizes, 8, 10, and 12. This expands the rod’s species versatility greatly. With the size range offered you can be sure you have the tool you need whether chasing bowfin in the swamps, big tailwater trout, stripers, and of course big pike and musky. We haven’t had the chance yet, but we are certain this rod will excel with a variety of tasks in the jungle as well as various saltwater species.
TFO recommends a wide grain window for each rod in the line up, allowing for a wide variety of conditions and circumstances. Below you will find each rod and it’s recommended grain range.
9′ 8wt 4pc
Grain Weight: 250-350gr

9’ 10wt 4pc
Grain Weight: 350-450gr

9’ 12wt 4pc
Grain Weight: 450-550gr

Ultimately the line used will depend on the conditions, type of fly, and casting style or preference. If you are picking up one of these rods give us a call at the shop and we’d be happy to help get you dialed in!

Each rod comes with a labeled rod sock and tube. The rod also comes with TFO’s unconditional lifetime warranty.

The New Axiom II-X Fly Rod

Flip Pallot & Blane Chocklett fishing the new TFO Axiom II-X series of fly rods.

Temple Fork Outfitters has been hard at work designing the Axiom II-X series of fly rods. A single handed, fast action fly rod designed for the intermediate to advanced fly fishing angler seeking to maximize accuracy and distance.

The Axiom II-X was designed for the intermediate to advanced fly angler seeking to maximize accuracy at distance. Based on the fast action of Temple Fork Outfitters’ renowned TiCrX, they used their highest modulus material and Axiom technology to redefine performance in an extremely powerful fly rod. Unlike other “stiff” rods, the Axiom II-X delivers both the energy necessary for long casts and the incredible tracking and recovery which results in accuracy at distance. If it comes down to one cast, one perfect long cast, this is the fishing tool to do the job.

Constructed with the best materials.

TFO’s patented and exclusive Axiom technology embeds a double-helix of Kevlar within the blank. The superior tensile strength of the Kevlar acts to buttress the rod’s carbon fiber matrix in compression. The result is that Axiom series fly rods stabilize faster and smoother, absorb shock better and comfortably tolerate over-loading. The angler benefits because Axiom technology virtually eliminates the ability to over power the rod when casting. Bottom line – whether you carry more line in the air or push the rod to the limit, you won’t feel any mushiness – What you will feel is line ripping out of your hand as it launches.

The Axiom II-X series is constructed with high modulus carbon fiber material and an embedded double-helix of Kevlar within the blank all finished in a satin sky blue. The series features premium quality cork handles with burl accents, anodized aluminum up-locking reel seats with carbon fiber inserts. All eight models feature alignment dots color coded by line weight, RECOIL guides by REC and ultra-lightweight chromium-impregnated stainless-steel snake guides. All Axiom II-X rods are packaged in a labeled rod sock and rod tube.

The Axiom II-X series delivers exceptional casting performance and efficiency that when combined with TFO’s no-fault lifetime warranty make them the perfect choice when distance and accuracy are the price of a life time trophy. We here at Mad River Outfitters are excited to offer such an exceptional fly fishing rod.

TFO Drift Fly Rod

The new Drift nymphing rod from Temple Fork Outfitters is one of the most significant advancements in specific nymph rods…..ever.  Goes from 9′, 10′, 11’3″ to 12’3″….you pick depending on conditions and water.

The TFO Drift Fly Rod is designed to be light in overall weight, fast damping and well balanced as they used a mixture of their highest modulus carbon fiber along with a down-locking reel seat and removable weighted fighting butt. You can further fine tune balance with 3/8th inch ID washers – depending on the weight of your reel. The tip is ultra-sensitive allowing one to distinguish between a subtle take and a bottom tick with a soft tipped action that protects the very light tippets often needed to sustain a drift and remain invisible to a selective trout.

The versatility of this rod will amaze as it can be fished as a traditional 9’ 4 piece 3 weight, add a 1’ section to make it a 10’ rod, a 27 inch section to make it an 11’ 3 inch rod, or add both conversion sections for a length of 12’ 3 inches. So from traditional 3 weight lines to the tight line nymphing techniques including French, Czech and Polish styles, you’ll make the “leader only” tuck casts with accuracy and ease – at any rod length. Finally, we included a 3 inch lower cork grip that replaces the weighted fighting butt – perfect for the new micro spey lines and techniques… just pick the optimal length for the environment and application.

Jason Randall, design coordinator, challenged TFO to create stripping guides that would allow one to add one or more sections without un-stringing line, leader and flies. A big challenge but they did it… and have patented a guide that Lefty called one of the greatest innovations he has seen in the last 50 years. Rod length can be changed on stream in a matter of seconds and a reel with a couple of spare spools carrying a WF 3, nymphing setup and micro spey and you are well armed for any challenge you might face.

“We believe this is the most innovative and versatile fly rod ever designed – thanks to Jason’s help. There are virtually no trout fishing environments were the selection of conversion options will prove less than superb presentation to the most selective of trout. The rod also bridges the gap between traditional Tenkara and fly rods with reels.”- Temple Fork Outfitters

TFO Drift Fly Rod- TF-03-90-6-D- includes rod case and sack as shown

9’/10’/11’3″/12’3″

9′ 4pc without fighting butt = 3.4 oz

9′ 4pc with fighting butt  = 4.5 oz

10′ 5pc with fighting butt = 4.9 oz

11’3″ 5pc with fighting butt = 5.5 oz
