The landscapes of the Chilean Patagonia are of an overwhelming natural beauty. The mixture of the natural elements- wind, water and sun- continuously transform this magical landscape, giving it life...and making this region a unique and unforgettable corner of the world.
Not to mention, Coyhaique Town, our base of operations, is also known as the "brown trout capitol of the world". That’s where we come in...
Patagonia Trouters is a family owned, local business in Coyhaique, Chile, that is now offering it’s expertise..... gained from years of experience in the fly fishing and regional tourism business.
Nicolas Gonzalez... or Nico as we call him... is a native of the Aysen Region, where he has been a professional fly fishing guide for more than 15 years now. Nicolas is a pure pleasure to fish with and knows the waters in the region as well as anybody. He is licensed by the regional guides association, is certified in First Aid, and also speaks perfect English! Flip Pallot, who fished with Nico for the filming of two "Walker’s Cay Chronicles", declared Nico to be one of the best guides he had ever fished with! Nico also works with some of the best guides in the region when larger groups require.
Nico’s wife, Ilsie Wolf, is the "Woman behind the details". She came to the region from Santiago and decided to stay. She has combined her organizational and business skills with Nico’s fly fishing reputation and together they are working hard to make the Patagonia Trouter’s dream come true!
Nico and Ilsie have teamed up with Brian Flechsig of Mad River Outfitters/Mad River Media and will be offering very exclusive, custom trips to the Patagonia Region of Chile. One of our specialties will be couples trips, offering a non-fishing alternative for those who wish to bring spouses or non-fishing others. This exciting "tour" package has been put together by the partners..but Brian and Nico also promise not to lose sight of why we are there... trophy trout on dry flies!
Below is some further information on the trips but please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Upon sign up you will receive detailed information on our trip options and will be required to select your "choices" so that we can tailor the trip to your needs.
We will be happy to consult with you, at no charge, on trip options so that we assure you have the kind experience you are looking for!

The Lodge- Coyhaique, Chile
The Coyhaique River Lodge
In the Heart and Soul of Northern Patagonia
Coyhaique River Lodge is located on 40 acres just 5 miles outside the city of Coyhaique on the banks of the Coyhaique River. The 10,000 square foot lodge is designed to greet and host our visitors who have come to enjoy the magnificent beauty of the region.
Two Queen-size beds in each of the eight large guest rooms will spoil even the most particular of guests. After a full day of fly fishing and adventures, the large deck overlooking the picturesque Coyhaique River and endless mountains beyond, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a sip of the local Pisco Sour or a glass of the finest Chilean wine.

We are honored to be able to host the guests of Trouters at the Coyhaique River Lodge and know that you will feel a part of their family as well. We feel that it is one of the nicest lodges of it's kind in the area."
The Fishing- XI Region, Chile
In the Aysen Region, there are countless rivers and lakes of diverse dimensions and qualities. This offers the angler an un-paralleled variety of fishing options. Plus, our spirit of adventure constantly drives us to discover new fishing locales, giving us the opportunity to access places where very few people have visited. Our geographic area of operations is vast and it's multiple resources allow us to offer fly fishing tours anywhere from the Rio Nirehuao in the North to the Baker River in the South.
Patagonia is famous for it's Brown Trout fishing. So much so, it is often referred to as the "Brown Trout Capital of the World". You will also encounter some rainbow trout as well.
The focus in the region is Dry Fly Fishing! Some of the best to be had on the planet as a matter of fact! We throw tons of terrestrial type flies with foam and rubber-legged patterns being the standard fare. In recent years, the streamer fishing has been catching on and we catch some enourmous fish on these big flies. All-in-all, you would be hard-pressed to find better trout fishing anywhere on planet earth!!!
A typical week would be as follows:
- 2 days walk-and-wade- smaller/spring creeks
- 2 days float trips- larger rivers
- 1 day lake trip
- 1 day you decide
As stated, we want to work with you to put together a fishing experience that matches your needs and wants. If you don't like boats....we walk all week. If you can't get around so well, we float! We take great pride in putting together a custom week for you and your group, a service that other lodges and outfitters simply do not offer.
You need to have some basic fly fishing gear and some flies. Bring along a 5 and a 6wt rod with floating lines, maybe a sinking line if you are into streamers. A handful of 2X-4X leaders and trippet...throw in your waders and boots and you are all set. A detailed equipment listing and fly recommendation will be sent upon reserving your week although if any questions, don't hesitate to call.
We don't want to be the biggest.....just the best!" - Nico Gonzalez
