Located on the seventh mile of the South Holston River in Bristol, Tennesse, the South Holston River Lodge is a fly fisher's dream. Truly some of the finest fly fishing, and dry fly fishing, that the East has to offer. A main lodge, several cabins and a main dining hall are surrounded by wilderness and river. You will find all of the amenities that you could ask for and more.
Driving to the lodge is very easy, but we can also arrange airport pickup from the Tri-Cities Regional airport (TRI). You should plan on arriving on your 1st day around 4:00 p.m. You will be met by General Manager Jon Hooper and your host from Mad River Outfitters if a hosted trip. After dinner, our guests will typically gather for an evening of cocktails and an overview of daily schedules, river conditions and basic lodge/guide policies. After this brief orientation, most guests gather around the firepit on the banks of the river for a nightcap, cigar and fishing stories. The game room also provides a relaxing atmosphere after a great day of fishing. The lodge also features a fully-stocked fly tying area at your disposal. Although there is no guided fishing on your arrival day, guests are welcome to take the opportunity to fish the homepool in front of the lodge on their own.

Perhaps the best trout fishing in the East......"- Lefty Kreh
The South Holston River offers some of the finest fly fishing you may ever encounter.....really! The South Fork of South Holston River is a cold, clear tailwater holding between 4,000 to 5,000 trout per linear mile. The fish average from 10 to 20 inches in length, but wild browns to 10 lbs are caught each season.
Although dry fly fishing is a staple on these waters, a typical day fishing on these waters may include nymphing or streamer fishing as fish adapt to changing water conditions and aquatic insect hatches. If you've never experienced a summer-time Sulphur hatch on the South Holston, you are missing one of the best dry fly experiences of your life!!
Regardless of the conditions though, your guide will work with you to find the best approach that fits your experience and your expectations. Their guides spend hundreds of days on the river each year and are happy to share with you all of the elements of technique necessary for catching trout and bass on their waters- regardless of your experience level. They are passionate about the sport and will do everything possible to make sure your time on the water is educational and enjoyable.
About 30 minutes from South Holston River Lodge lies the Watauga River. The Watauga is approximately 60 miles long flowing from Grandfather Mountain in Western North Carolina into the Tennessee Valley. Offering a diverse population of aquatic insects, the Watauga provides solid hatch opportunities during spring, summer and fall. The Mother's Day caddis hatch is an awesome phenomenon to witness...and fish.
As will all of these tailwaters, fishing is dictated by generation schedules set by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The Watauga is best when generation is at a minimum. Long runs and deep pools define the Watauga as an amazing stretch of trout water. We highly recommend the Watauga as an alternate if you would like to experience a different river during your stay at SHRL.
