El Pescador Lodge is located on Ambergris Caye in Belize, just a short flight (included) from the Belize International airport. Since 1974 fishermen, families, divers, couples and eco-adventure travelers have made El Pescador their top choice for an all-inclusive Belize vacation.
The gracious, mahogany colonial lodge is right on the beach, facing the sea and surrounded by fragrant tropical flowering plants and the whisper of shady palms. Not only will you find the serenity and relaxation that you are looking for, you'll have the convenience of being a few miles north of San Pedro Town and it's gift shops, restaurants, bars and night spots. Guests usually travel by water taxi which stops right at the dock.
Each of the thirteen guest rooms in the main lodge face the sea and are just steps away from the swimming pool adjacent to the beach. All have private baths, overhead fans and air-conditioning.
The restaurant specializes in fresh, local Caribbean cuisine with meals served on their outdoor deck or in their dining room. You may join the group for hors d'ouvres from 3:00 p.m. in the bar...the perfect place for sharing stories after a day's fishing. The house specialty is tropical rum punch but they also offer top shelf liquors, wine and beer. Many international cigars are available in San Pedro and are sold upon request.

Ambergris Caye was probably named by the pirates who frequented the island in the early 17th century. On shores sheltered by the Belize barrier reef, the pirates discovered a convenient hiding place and due to the abundance of Ambergris, an additional source of income. Ambergris, a form of whale excrement, was a critical ingredient for the manufacturing of perfume and fetched a good price in Europe.
Although it is now considered an island, Ambergris Caye is actually the southernmost tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. The region was ruled by the Maya from approximately 900 AD- 1400 AD. The Maya conducted extensive trade in the region and probably dug the narrow channel that now separates Ambergis Caye from the peninsula to facilitate access by canoe.
San Pedro, the main village on the island, was founded is 1848 by four families of Mestizo refugees who fled an insurgency in the Yucatan Peninsula. These settlers had been farmers and fishermen and provided food to the British landowners harvesting lumber in the area. Named for the patron saint of fishermen, Saint Peter, San Pedro began to grow and thrive. Coconuts were an important crop until the 1930's and at one time, there were a number of plantations on the island. The commercial harvest of lobster began in the 1920's and eventually led to the formation of fishing cooperatives in 1960.
The first tourists arrived in Ambergris Caye in late 1950's and the first hotel was built on the island in 1965. Commercial air travel began a few years later and the tourism industry grew from there. The first dive shop opened in 1970 and today travelers can explore the Hol Chan Marine Reserve off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye with a certified dive master and guide. San Pedro Town has a variety of fine restaurants and is host to visitors from all over the world. The fishing around Ambergris Caye is also a big draw. Some of the finest flats fishing in the world is minutes from the island. Tourism is now the foundation of the local economy and islanders are proud to share the beauty and hospitality of their home.
"Belize offers the fly fisherman an exciting variety of opportunities for flats species and El Pescador has been a great host/lodge for decades. They know how to serve fly fishermen! Belize is easy to get to and best of all everyone speaks English"- Lefty Kreh 2009
At El Pescador you can achieve the anglers' ultimate dream- a Grand Slam of bonefish, tarpon and permit. Belize's shallow water contains the only classic tarpon flats outside south Florida. The flats are world renowned for offering the opportunity to sight cast to tarpon 12 months a year.
You can cast the lagoons for lady fish or snook, go outside the reef into the deep water for tuna and wahoo. Troll the reef for kingfish or barracuda. Jig the bottom for snapper and grouper. The choice is yours!
Belize fishing averages good to great! The climate is neo-tropical....the temperature varies less than 10 degrees year-round. So rather than seasons, they have micro climate changes where they are subject to the occasional cold front in winter months. Wind is part of their tropical environment; some days are windy, some are not. It is semi-arid and gets less than 25 inches of rain annually.
The fish reside there 12 months of the year, plus the addition of a major tarpon migration in late summer. Any day of the year you can be assured that the fishery is diverse and abundant.
Months tend to blend into one another. If their "best" month is a 10, then their "worst" month is an 8 1/2 or 9. Again, it's the passing front that has more impact than the time of year. These fronts possess two common characteristics: they are un-predictable and they tend to be short-lived.
So practice your casting and come with us to one of the world's premier saltwater fishing destinations!
The bonefish grounds are only minutes from the lodge. Most of the fly fishing for bonefish is done from the bow of the boat, but there are flats that can be waded as well. The bonefish run from 2-5 lbs and are plentiful.
The El Pescador fishery has year-round resident tarpon over 100 lbs. The fish are spread out over the 250 square mile fishing grounds. In the late summer (July, August, September), this is the added bonus of a large migratory population, which doubles the tarpon numbers.
Permit are found on the bonefish flats and on many of the tarpon flats as well. Belize Permit are found in large schools and range from 4-30 lbs, with the majority running about 8-10 lbs. Jack cravalle, barracuda, cobia and snook are also found on the flats and in the surrounding mangrove lagoons.
All El Pescador fishing guides were born and raised on the island. The lodge prides itself on having some of the most experienced guides in Belize. Many of their fishing guides have been with them for 20 ears and now a second generation of El Pescador guides is in full-swing! Most of them have been trained by their fathers and uncles with whom they typically spend several years learning the craft before captaining their own flats boat.
The guides encyclopedic knowledge of this fishery comes from a lifetime dedicated to learning where the fish are and how they behave. El Pescador guides are excellent technical fishermen and will be happy to provide instruction during your fishing day.
At El Pescador they have created a teaching environment. When you arrive they will sit down with you, make sure that you have the gear that you need, describe the current fishing conditions, and generally get a feel for what you hope to achieve while fishing in Belize. Each day your guide will assist you with casting and fishing instruction, and when you return to the lodge you may choose to join the evening casting workshops where we work on the tools needed to succeed in fishing the flats.
