Brian Meszaros and Great Lakes Flyfishing and Waterfowl, LLC. Come and fly fish the crystal clear waters of Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River for a variety of warmwater game fish. Lake St.Clair has been recognized byAmerican Angler magazine as one of the “Top 50 Fly Fishing Destinations in the U.S.” and may be the best smallmouth bass fishery anywhere. In addition, Lake St. Clair is rated as one of the top fisheries in the U.S. for muskellunge. Anglers are also likely to encounter largemouth bass, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch, carp, walleye, drum, and rock bass.
There is no down time fishing this area! Action starts in April for northern pike. In May, the annual white bass run takes place and offers anglers the opportunity to catch dozens of these tenacious fighters in the 1-3 pound range. In addition, smallmouth bass begin to move onto shallow flats and offer exciting sight fishing opportunities. In June, smallmouth fishing continues to heat up along with consistent encounters with muskies. Largemouth bass and jumbo perch add to the mix. Stalking monster carp on the flats is also an option.
Lake St. Clair has an average depth of around 10 feet with a constant influx of cool water from Lake Huron. Fishing activity stays consistent throughout the entire summer! Some of the best action of the year occurs in July and August while working weed edges, gravel bars, rock piles, and hidden shipwrecks in the main lake. Mixed bags catches are common and Mr. Muskie can show up at any time.
Fall is big fish time! September, October, and early November are great times to target super-sized smallmouth and really focus on chasing muskies. It is not uncommon for big bass to eat the same giant streamers being thrown for muskies. Much of this is sight fishing and is a very exciting saltwater-like experience.
